Thomas Tuchel has revealed Chelsea have doubts over the availability of Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech for Saturday’s clash against Southampton.
The pair both featured as substitutes in the Blues’ 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie in midweek.
That result marked a second successive defeat for Thomas Tuchel’s side, following their 4-1 loss against Brentford in the Premier League last weekend.
Callum Hudson-Odoi remains an absentee with an Achilles issue, while Lukaku and Ziyech are set to undergo tests after missing training on Thursday.
‘Callum Hudson-Odoi is still out and we are a bit in doubt with Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech,’ Tuchel told reporters on Friday.
‘So we need to see. They were not in training yesterday due to little problems but we hope to have them in training.
‘We need a test and confirmation from training at 3pm [to see] if they are available for tomorrow.’
‘He has Achilles pain, it’s just painful, not a major injury,’ Tuchel added on Lukaku.
Lukaku missed a golden chance to get Chelsea back in the game at 3-1 against Madrid, which Tuchel feels would’ve been a ‘huge boost’ for the striker had he found the back of the net.
‘I think it’s not only for Romelu who is lacking at this very moment a bit of shape,’ Tuchel added. ‘After the international break, I had the feeling that we all lack sharpness, a bit of shape. It’s a lack of form individually and it affects the group, of course.
‘It’s a bit sad, Romelu had one good chance and one very big chance and nothing helps more than goals. It would have been a huge boost.
‘Another thing, the best thing, is to train good and take training seriously and take care about the process, which he really did in the last days. He missed training yesterday. Hopefully, he comes back today and feels good with no pain to be available for tomorrow and then we will see.’
