Arsenal continue to keep a close eye on Hugo Ekitike ahead of the summer following their interest in the forward during the January transfer window, according to a report from the Chronicle.
Ekitike is one of a number of young French players threatening to develop into a world-class talent. He has been a revelation in Ligue 1 this season.
The 19-year-old has scored nine times in the top-flight. And his goals have played a key role in Reims keeping themselves far enough away from the relegation zone.
Reports claimed that the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle all wanted the £25 million teenager in January. The Chronicle notes that the Magpies agreed a deal on deadline day. However, Ekitike ultimately opted to stay in France.
Unfortunately, a hamstring injury has disrupted his season since the window. He did not play a single game in March. And the Chronicle reports that he could still be several weeks away from a comeback after a setback.
Nevertheless, the Chronicle adds that Arsenal continue to keep a close eye on Ekitike.
Ekitike could be perfect striker signing for Arsenal this summer
Arsenal need to sign at least one striker in the upcoming window, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah out of contract.
The supporters will hope that the first is a marquee name. But if they do pursue a second, perhaps someone such as Ekitike could be absolutely ideal for Arsenal.
He is clearly making an impact already. However, he would be signed with one eye on the future and the player he could go on to become. And thus, he may be more receptive to the idea of not being first-choice immediately.
Oscar Garcia previously labelled him ‘very special‘. So Arsenal should definitely keep an eye on his form upon his return from injury.
