Mourinho makes strong push to pinch Man Utd ace with transfer contact commencing

Nemanja Matic is the subject of strong interest from Roma, who could reunite him with Jose Mourinho after his upcoming Manchester United departure, it is claimed.

Matic confirmed recently that this will be his final season at Old Trafford, despite his contract having another year to run. The defensive midfielder, who has started 11 Premier League games this season, will leave a gap in the squad.

It remains to be seen how Manchester United will fill it. From Matic’s perspective, the important thing is to find his next club.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who will become a consultant to the club in the summer, has supported Matic’s decision to announce his departure when he did. However, there have only been a few clues since as to the next step for the Serbian.

He was linked with Atletico Madrid by the Spanish sporting media recently. But another solution that is emerging – via Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb – is Roma.

The potential transfer to Italy would see Jose Mourinho sign Matic for a third different club. He previously brought him in for a second spell with Chelsea and then led him to Manchester United.

Now, the 33-year-old’s time at his current club is nearing its end. With Mourinho desperate to sign a defensive midfielder for Roma, a reunion may make sense.

Therefore, the ex-Man Utd boss has given his approval to the move. Contacts are apparently underway, with a positive feeling that the negotiations will reach a successful conclusion.

Matic ready for new experience

Matic has never played in Serie A before, so it would be a new experience for him in the twilight of his career. The same would go for Atletico Madrid potentially taking him to La Liga. But the Roma route looks likelier at this stage.

Any terms of the transfer or contract details are not yet apparent.

Mourinho has given Matic more appearances than any other coach during his career so far, fielding him 159 times between his stints with Chelsea and Man Utd. In fact, only six players have ever played more for the current Roma coach.

Those tallies could be about to increase too. But for now, Matic must remain focused on the final few months of his Man Utd career.
