Man City vs Man United: Red Devils enter the race to sign world-class striker

Manchester United are currently preparing for a highly-anticipated Premier League showdown with bitter rivals Manchester City, but this does not mean the team aren’t focused on transfers for next summer.

In fact, the latest reports have linked the English giants with a move for one of football’s deadliest attackers. That man is none other than Robert Lewandowski, the Bayern Munich sensation who continues to break goalscoring records despite his age.

The Polish striker is arguably the best striker in world football currently, with the former Dortmund ace leading the race for this season’s European Golden Boot. However, his contractual situation at the Allianz Arena has cast a doubt over his future with the Bavarians.

The player has only 18 months left on his contract and is yet to agree to new terms in Germany. As a result, while a Bundesliga stay appears to be the preference, the odds of him leaving in the summer grows by the month as Bayern Munich will not want to see him leave for free in just over a year.

This has put a number of top European teams on alert, including Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Atletico Madrid. According to 90 min, the Red Devils are ready to throw their hat in the ring, with the 20-time English giants having made contact with Bayern Munich and asking to be kept informed about his situation.

However, this report should be taken with a pinch of salt for two reasons. Firstly, Lewandowski is already 33, and given that Manchester United already have two talented attackers above the age of 30 in Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, it might not be the wisest move regardless of Robert’s quality. Additionally, the club are in need of a younger striker due Rangnick’s ambition of playing high-intensity football similar to Liverpool and Manchester City, meaning a veteran might not cut it.
