Liverpool are reportedly lining up a replacement for Joe Gomez as they plan a £25 million swoop for Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer.
Liverpool are reportedly lining up a bid for Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer who could be a replacement for Joe Gomez, who is understood to be a top target for Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa this summer.
Italian news outlet TuttoMercato are reporting that Bremer will be targeted by Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer, after a possible deal in January was explored. The news arrives after the man he could be replacing, Gomez, was labelled a ‘top target’ for Villa ahead of the summer transfer window, as Gerrard looks to put his stamp on the squad in his first pre-season in charge.
Gomez’s first team opportunities look limited at Anfield for the foreseeable future, despite recently featuring in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Watford in the Premier League. Gomez replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back in this fixture due to injury and also showcased his versatility as a player at the highest level, after assisting Diogo Jota to give his side the lead.
The 24-year-old is expected to leave Liverpool this summer in search of regular game time, which Gerrard could offer him in claret and blue as he looks to address a leaky defence which recently conceded four goals in the bizarre performance against Tottenham Hotspur, which saw Villa dominate Antonio Conte’s side for the majority of the first half.
The Villa boss commented on the defensive performance in the aftermath of the loss, where he stated: “If you take your chances in that first 45 minutes maybe you don’t have to play that well in the second half.
“We asked if we could maintain it. We knew we gave a lot to the first half so to expect them to go and be that outstanding for 90 minutes is probably slightly unrealistic, I suppose, but, from a defensive point of view, some of the moments and individual mistakes we’ve made, are really poor on our behalf.”
