‘I gave everything I could’ – Matt Doherty sends touching message to Spurs fans

Matt Doherty has posted a touching message on social media, admitting that he really enjoyed being at Tottenham and will continue to cheer for his former teammates.

Tottenham’s decision to terminate Doherty’s contract in order to allow him to sign for Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day came as a huge surprise to many.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold explained on Wednesday that the Irishman was set to join Atletico on a loan deal without any option or obligation to buy.

However, Spurs then realised on deadline day that they were already at the limit of the first-team players they could loan out (8) and thus had to find a late compromise by terminating the 31-year-old’s contract.

The journalist revealed that with Doherty being a popular member of the dressing room, many of the Tottenham players were left ‘shocked’ by his sudden exit.

After signing for Atletico, Doherty has taken to Instagram to remark that he gave everything during his two and a half years at the North London club.

He wrote: ‘Thank you @spursofficial for 2 and a half years in which I gave everything I could. I loved going to work there it was a huge pleasure for me. The people who work there day to day and the players are people I will keep in contact with for life. Big things are coming Tottenham’s way and I can’t wait to see my friends there succeed.

Spurs Web Opinion

This post proves that Doherty is an extremely classy individual, and it is easy to see why he is liked by many of his Tottenham teammates. I do wonder if things could have worked out very differently for the 30-year-old had he not picked up a knee injury against Aston Villa in April of last year, just after he had established himself as a vital cog in the team. Everyone at The Spurs Web would like to wish Matt the best of luck for the rest of the season at Atletico and beyond.
