Bryan Gil has been surprisingly included in the Spain National Team for the first time in almost two years ahead of this month’s fixtures with the Tottenham man on loan at Sevilla – prompting reaction from Erik Lamela and Emerson Royal.
Gil, 22, has left Tottenham on loan for a second time after just two Premier League starts during the first half of the season. It comes after playing for Valencia during the second half of last term. Now, he is back at boyhood club Sevilla.
Clocking up nine outings for Sevilla, Gil has scored one and laid on an assist. Not the most breathtaking of form, but it is enough to see him included in Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad – the manager’s first, since Luis Enrique was sacked.
Having previously won four caps, Gil is now in line to add to that for the first time in two years – since joining Spurs. He last played in the 2021 Nations League semi-finals, a 2-1 win over Italy. Gil underlined his delight with a post on Insta.
A real achievement for Gil who has seen his career go a bit sideways since joining Spurs in the summer of 2021. A deal that saw Spurs pay Sevilla a fee of £21.6million, plus Lamela. He is seemingly getting his career back on track at Sevilla.
He has plenty of competition, too. Dani Olmo, Mikel Oyarzabal, Nico Williams and Iago Aspas have also got the call-up. It is a Spain squad that is very different from the World Cup – with the likes of Ferran Torres and Marco Asensio left out.
Lamela – who is now playing alongside Gil having been included in a deal to take him to Spurs – responded to Gil’s post. As did Tottenham man Royal. Spain take on Norway and Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifiers on the 25th and 28th.
