Carragher explains why Konate should replace Matip as Van Dijk’s main partner next season
Ibrahima Konate has played 23 times for the Reds this season and has yet to lose in any of them.
In the Premier League, though, Joel Matip has been the favoured starter alongside to Virgil van Dijk, starting 27 games to Konate’s six.
“He’s terrific isn’t he,”Jamie Carragher says of Konate, who should start over Matip next season. Next season, I believe Konate will be the top choice to partner Virgil van Dijk. He has a chance to beat Matip.
“It’s not like Matip did anything illegal. I just think Konate is so young and so talented that you should just let him play.
“He’s getting a lot of games right now [but he could get more] – but he’s great.”
In the Premier League and Champions League, Konate averages 2 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, and 2.8 clearances per game. He’s only 22 years old, and we’re confident he’ll be a fantastic defender for the Reds for many years to come.
