Barcelona set to offer new contract to midfield prodigy: Fabrizio Romano

A fresh update from journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that talks between Barcelona and midfielder Gavi is now into the final stages and that the team plans to offer a new contract anytime this week.

With defender Ronald Araujo tied until 2026, Barcelona are working on finding the best possible solution with regards to Gavi. The 17-year-old midfielder, who has a contract until 2023, has rejected a few approaches already from the club.

The team has been working on Gavi’s contract since January. In March, news surfaced that the midfielder has rejected fresh offers despite being offered improved terms in comparison to previous deals.

Since then, Barça have been trying to establish a middle ground and it seems that their efforts will finally bear fruit. As Romano said, Barcelona are set to meet with Gavi’s agent in the coming days.

By then, the team will put forward their terms of the deal as their intention regarding the 17-year-old has not changed. Furthermore, not only the team, but even the player wants to stay. This was recently confirmed by sporting director Mateu Alemany himself.

“Ousmane Dembélé and Gavi want to continue here. It’s very important, we will do everything we can to keep them at Barca,” Alemany was quoted as saying.

“We are limited in the salary budget, as I always say, so we have to be careful. We will do our best.”

It is believed that Barcelona’s movement in the transfer market was one of the reasons why Gavi’s deal is being delayed. Midfielder Franck Kessie, who will arrive from Milan on a free transfer, will earn significantly more than the 17-year-old.

Kessie’s yearly wages are higher than what Barcelona offered Gavi in the past, which was one of the reasons why he was quick to reject.

As of today, while the feelings are positive, Barcelona want to wrap up the deal before the summer transfer window in order to avoid another Ousmane Dembele fiasco
