In a matter of less than two seasons, Pedri has gone on to become the face of FC Barcelona. From an unknown face in Spain’s lower divisions to winning the Golden Boy award, the teenager’s journey has been superb.
Such has been his success that the club began their search for the ‘new Pedri’ almost immediately. The result of the operation was the transfer of Pablo Torre from Racing Santander.
In March, the Catalans announced that they reached an agreement with the third division side to sign the prodigal midfielder for a fee of €5 million. However, that number can reach €20 million based on add-ons.
According to reports from SPORT, the Catalans have three options for the teenager in the upcoming season, which will be his first with Barcelona.
The first option would be the same route taken with Pedri: to promote the player directly to the first team. However, this could place the player under severe pressure for the likes of Gavi, Nico, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and possibly Franck Kessie, already competing for two spots.
Alternatively, the Blaugranes can register the player with the B team and keep him in first-team dynamics, much like Gavi and Nico earlier this season. This would allow the club to use him in the first team, but push him to the subsidiary side when needed.
The final option is to loan Torre back to Racing. The idea does not seem appealing as the manager will want the player to get more minutes under his belt in a higher tier.
The final decision will be taken in pre-season when Xavi has had the opportunity to work with the player and see his profile up-close.
