‘As good as I’ve seen him’: Joe Cole thinks 26-year-old just put in his best ever display for Chelsea yesterday

Joe Cole claims that Timo Werner’s performance last night in the Champions League was some of the best football he’s seen him play in a Chelsea shirt.

Werner got a goal and assist yesterday during Chelsea’s second leg against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

It was a superb showing from the Blues to claw back a 3-1 deficit from the first leg, but Madrid eventually came out winners at the Bernabeu with Karim Benzema’s extra time goal.

Werner, who’s had quite a hectic few days, has hit a mini purple patch of form.

The 26-year-old attacker scored twice at the weekend in the Premier League against Southampton, as well as really impressing in Madrid on Tuesday night.

Pundit and ex-Chelsea star Joe Cole waxed lyrical about Werner in his post-match analysis. He even suggested it was his best performance for the Blues so far since his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2020.

“It’s a credit to him and his personality that he can come in and do this,” Cole told BT Sport 2 (10:45pm, 12 April).

“No Chelsea fan will ever begrudge anything because he works his socks off, so he’s well loved, he’s respected at the club. This is as good as I’ve seen him at times tonight in a Chelsea shirt. He was outstanding.”

Chelsea turning point

Can this last week be a turning point in Werner’s career at Stamford Bridge?

For now, there is still so much more the German forward needs to do to show he’s the long-term Chelsea solution.

However, there’s no denying he creates a lot when he plays. He’s now up to 10 goals and five assists so far this season across all competitions, too.

It’s been reported recently that Werner is expected to leave the Bridge at the end of the season in the summer window.

There’s been too much inconsistency during his Blues career and you can definitely argue it makes sense for him to leave. His recent performances do plant a seed of doubt in your mind, though.
