‘As always’ – Kalvin Phillips sends message to Leeds United fans after Manchester City defeat

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has paid tribute to the club’s supporters for their backing during Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester City.

The loss also served as a blow to the Elland Road club in their battle to avoid relegation, but Phillips insists the team will not be giving in as they aim to secure their top-flight status.

Leeds endured another tough afternoon against Manchester City this season, conceding four goals to go with the seven they let in at The Etihad earlier in the campaign.

Rodri, Nathan Ake, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho all got on the scoresheet for Pep Guardiola’s side, who have now returned to the top of the Premier League table.

By contrast, that defeat has seen Leeds slip to 17th in the current standings, five points clear of 18th placed Everton, who have two games in the hand on the Whites.

However, Phillips remains bullish about Leeds’ prospects of staying in the division, while also appreciative of the continued support from the home crowd at Elland Road on Saturday.

Taking to Twitter to reflect on that defeat to City, the England international wrote: “Not the result we wanted but we’ll keep on fighting. Amazing support as always”

You get the feeling that Saturday was always going to be a tough afternoon for Phillips and Leeds.

With City possessing the quality they do, and the fact they needed a win to go top, Pep Guardiola’s side would have been a big challenge for the vast majority of teams this weekend.

However, it is clear that Phillips still remains confident that Leeds can do what they need to in order to retain their top-flight status, particularly with the support they have behind them.

But with Arsenal and Chelsea to come in their next two games, that is still not going to be an easy task for Jesse Marsch’s side between now and the end of the season.
